When her husband was recruited to run for town council in 2009, Sara decided she was better suited for the job. She won that race, went on to serve in the Maine state House in 2012, and was elected speaker in 2016.

Planned Parenthood calls her “an outspoken leader for the women, LGBTQ communities, and people of color of Maine, and for sexual reproductive health and rights.” Under her leadership, the House passed 6 laws to expand reproductive rights and abortion access.
